About Our Namesake: General Hoyt S. Vandenberg

General Hoyt S. Vandenberg was a pivotal figure in the development of the United States Air Force and began his career commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps in 1923. Promoted to major in 1940 and with the beginning of World War II, his leadership, knowledge, and warfighting skills lead to his promotion seven times in five years until he achieved the rank of four-star general in the Army. With the establishment of the U.S. Air Force in 1947, he transferred to the new service as its first Vice Chief of Staff as a general; and a year later was promoted to its highest office as Chief of Staff of the Air Force and retired in 1953. His contributions to air power strategy during World War II and his advocacy for a strong, independent Air Force cemented his legacy as a giant in American military history.
